Ultraviolet light is applied as the germicidal agent, disrupting the chemical bonds of organic molecules such as the nucleic acids of bacterial & viral cells preventing cells from reproducing and killing them. Ultraviolet light is required because viruses are very small (0.3 micron), therefore filters designed for Giardia are ineffective.
Water is exposed to ultraviolet light twice, once before the filter (this reduces filter fouling by viruses and bacteria) and after the filter.
Sterilization occurs as water passes through non-fouling Teflon tubes which are surrounded by mercury vapour lamps. The lamps operate at a controlled temperature and emit ultraviolet light at a specific wavelength of 253.7 nanometres. At this wavelength harmful bacteria and viruses are exposed to a lethal dose of radiation. Turbulent flow path ensures maximum radiation exposure.
DRINKSAFE - Low Maintenance....
Change filter as required and replace mercury vapour lamp once per year. Quick action lamp holder for easy replacement of lamps. Typical operating cost is only 1 - 3 cents per litre.

Built in safety features to protect your family & employees include:
- All wetted parts are of food grade standard.
- Ultraviolet lights are protected in a panel. A micro switch turns the lamps off if the removable panel is accidentally opened whilst power is on.
- Earth leakage protection meets Australian Standards.
- External lamp operation indicator.
